Marianne Turner
Hometown: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
An Ashtanga class 17 years ago at the Downward Dog Yoga Centre in Toronto, under the authentic teachings and humble influence of Diane Bruni, planted the seed that would eventually lead MT to yoga as a way of life. A certified PT and Fitness Instructor (Can-Fit Pro) Marianne also completed her 200HR Teacher Training in 2016 and holds a 40HR Advanced Anatomy and Yin certification completed in 2017. Her classes are rooted in the primary sequence series and designed with a perspective to increase balance, strength and flexibility by turning inward and gaining mastery over external influences.
Who/what influences your teaching and practice currently?
Over the course of my evolution as a teacher, my greatest influence comes from my first yoga teacher, Diane Bruni, the renowned founder of Downward Dog in Toronto Canada. Her classes were packed and legendary, and to say that she could make anyone believe in themselves takes the words right out of my mouth. I had just moved to Toronto, and I didn't know it at the time but yoga was only starting to explode around the world and she was 'an integral part of a new paradigm of not putting teachers on a pedestal and making the approach to teaching safer and not invasive for anyone interested in learning the practices and teachings'. She was a lot of fun, very humble and authentic, she spoke truthfully and powerfully and I went to as many classes as I could, grateful and dripping with sweat. I recently learned of her passing and am deeply saddened by it, I was looking forward to attending her classes once again on my next trip home. Learning of her death has inspired me even more to be true and awake for myself and my students. Apart from Diane, other influences are certainly my students, from whom I learn parity and self acceptance, collaborating with other teachers, continuing my education and knowledge through training, self-study and reflections on the yogic traditions adopted by various philosophies.
How do you apply yoga practice to your every day life?
Every day in one way or another I am committed to regular practice. I persevere making healthy habits, I pay attention to my internal narrative as well as to the voice of spirit in my external world which guides me to go with the flow, I make self care and rest a priority and I find places in my life to put the poses.
What is a fun fact about you?
Um.... I dunno.... I write surreal poetry to expand your imagination.
What can students expect from your class?
The essential objective of her class is to allow the practice to be accessible to all including beginners and to invite any seasoned practitioner to refresh, cultivate and embody more deeply the 8 limbs of yoga. Coordinating breath and movement through powerful and steady Vinyasa sequences, bringing to light patterns of attention throughout and between the poses, students can expect to be challenged and vitalized at a moderate, serene and soulful pace. MT brings her unique talent and spirit as a singer and songwriter to the practice, offering her voice as a sound healing portal to Samadhi. With this gift, students will quickly find the ability to let go, drop into the self and rise above the limits and conditions of the mind and body, and thus be in the present moment more fully to achieve their highest physical development over time. Alternative postures and hands on adjustments are available where needed, and gentle massage therapy is given to bring the class to a close. Be prepared to be touched, nourished and relaxed!
All levels are welcome.
